The English-Speaking Union of the United States

Relationship of the Branches to the national organization

The English-Speaking Union of the United States is committed to promoting scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community.

The ESU is above all a partnership, in which ideas, leadership and initiatives are shared freely between and among National Headquarters and the Branches. Our network of 72 Branches around the country advance our mission by partnering with the national organization in educational programs, or by creating unique initiatives in response to local needs.

Branches' important role in their communities is best demonstrated by the grant and scholarship money awarded locally each year to teachers and students, which totals about half a million dollars every year. Many Branches also serve as vital cultural resources and provide platforms for high quality speakers, either provided by the National Headquarters or engaged locally.

The educational, cultural and social activities that take place in these communities are managed by a cadre of dedicated volunteers who plan membership events, host visiting speakers and scholars, and coordinate their Branches' participation in the Shakespeare Competition and scholarship programs.
